Lung function is measured and monitored when employees are exposed to air quality changes, or lung and airway irritants such as chemicals, dusts, asbestos etc that are or have been out of your control. We do this with spirometry - a sophisticated, specialised process that measures every aspect of the lungs and airways. This is then reflected on the persons exposure, smoking and injury/illness history to determine if work is having an impact on their lung function. 

A base line at pre-employment is the only way to determine your risks and health planning going forward, and then monitoring that on a regular basis to ensure no harm is occurring to your employee.
