What does a workplace wellness programme look like?

A wellness programme can be many things, not just a fitness program or a health promotion programme. It can be tailored to your individual company's needs. It is about demonstrating that your company is interested in its employee's health and safety and in the prevention of illness.

The rising disability injury/illness costs and company trends in poor health, such as reoccurring back, knee and shoulder injuries along with colds, flu, bronchitis etc. are reduced as a culture is created in which employees are empowered to take responsibility for their own health and wellbeing.

Example of a Workplace Wellness Programme

Initial Health Assessment

An initial health risk assessment, lifestyle risks that threatens an employee's health and wellbeing can be identified by the Occupational Health nurse:

  • Option 1: A Individual plan is set up and implemented by the employee. They are monitored by the Occ Health Nurse over a set time frame
  • Option 2: A plan with expected outcomes is developed with the employee and left with them to carry out. Plan reviewed at their next annual health check.

Consultation to form Company Health Plan

Using assessment data in consultation with key staff we look create a plan for the company. The plan may include health initiatives as:

Education - Workshops

Support employees with resources to help manage life stressors. Look at company trends so education programs can be provided in areas such as:

  • Fatigue management
  • Stress reduction
  • Time Management
  • Conflict resolution
  • Developing better communication skills
  • Managing anxiety and building self-esteem

Screening Clinics

  • Flu vaccinations
  • Blood pressure clinics
  • Cholesterol screening and diabetic screening
  • Aerobic fitness screening may be of value to emphasise overall fitness

Prevention Programmes

A broader and more comprehensive approach to employee health integrates job demands, employee characteristics, the work environment and other internal and external organisational and home influenced on their health.
